The question I hear most often regarding eating a healthy diet is where to start. There are so many different dietary fads out there and much information to sort through. This is a short step-by-step guide to changing your diet from SAD (Standard American Diet) to a good diet for a good health.
Depending on how intense your desire is for health, you can proceed along the number of steps that are appropriate for you. Even just following one principle will make a huge difference. If you want to go further in your health-changes, then proceed through the steps listed below.

STEP ONE
STOP FILLING UP ON TOXIC POISONS & JUNK FOODS
1. Switch to Organic foods
Pesticides, insecticides and fungicides are
the very top of the list of cancer-causing agents.

Pesticides have been linked to many diseases including Cancer, Obesity, Alzheimer's and Birth Defects. Organic food is said to be at least 50% more nutritious, richer in anti-oxidants, minerals and vitamins. Organic food is food that is free of dangerous chemical fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, hormones, synthetic materials, pesticides, irradiation and antibiotics. Organic foods are not genetically modified, altered or cloned.

Organic foods are also kinder. The meat, dairy and eggs that organic farmers produce are fed organic feed and allowed living conditions that accommodate the animals natural behavior, like access to the outdoors and sanitary living conditions.
2. Get off Bad-Fats
Many people try to have a low-fat diet or a no-fat diet in order to lose weight. Ironically, the body will hold onto weight as a response to this approach. The real issue with oils and fats is not whether to have them or not, it is which fats to eat or not. Eating good fat is crucial for mental health, physical energy, absorption of vitamins, critical for the nervous system, organ resilience, digestion, proper cell functioning and detoxification, hormonal balance… our bodies need fat! Good fats actually help us lose weight.
Fats to avoid: canola oil, fried oils and fried foods and any trans-fats, also known as hydrogenated oils (now illegal in New York city restaurants!). These fats can be found in margarines, vegetable shortening, processed and packaged foods.
Fats to Favor: Olive Oil, Sesame Oil, Ghee, Flax oil, Borage Oil, Virgin Coconut Oil, Sunflower oil, Fish Oil from mercury-free fish, Pumpkin Seed Oil (so yummy). 3. Switch to a Vegetable Based Diet
Meat-eating has been linked with cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, kidney stones and many other devastating diseases. The amino acids in meat are much more acidic, which means they favor inflammation, heat, infection (and aggravation!). Reduce meat products in your diet or eliminate them altogether. If remaining a carnivore - then eat small amounts of meat, no red-meat and eat the meat primarily during the lunch meal when digestive capacity is more powerful.
STEP TWO DON'T EAT LATE
1. Stop Eating Late
As the saying goes - whatever you eat after 7pm goes directly on your thighs and belly and clogs your arteries! Of course, what we get from eating late is much worse than just simple weight gain. At night our body's natural rhythm is to detoxify itself. When we eat during the detoxification period - those toxins remain in our body. Even worse, our digestive capacity is impaired. Our digest fire is on during the day - it is highest when the sun is highest - at noon. That is the ideal time for the biggest meal. At night, when we feel digestive fire in our gut, this is the self-cleaning-oven function in our system; this fire turns on to digest toxins and eliminates waste, not to digest a meal. Meals eaten after 7pm are poorly digested and sit in the body all night, giving a heavy, tired feeling in the morning (why so many feel depressed or need coffee in the morning). We never really digest that food completely and it's toxic sludge hangs around in the body, further impairing digesting the next day.
STEP THREE STEP UP THE NUTRITION

3. Favor Living Foods
Over heated, over-processed foods are a waste of our precious meal-times! Food that has been over-heated and over-processed are devoid of nutrition and are more likely to leave sticky, toxic residue in our bodies that act as blockages to our health.
Avoid: Refined Foods like White Flour, White Sugar, Fried Foods, Carbonated Beverages, Hydrogenated Oil, Margarine (plastic fat), MSG, Aspartame, Artificial Colorings, Flavorings; Cured, Salted and Cooked Meats.
Minimize baked goods, breads, muffins, cakes etc…
Favor: Foods cooked at boiling temperatures or less, Foods baked at lower temperatures (200 degrees or less), boiled steamed and raw foods. Also - cultured foods! Our favorite at the Trigug - Raw Sauerkraut (so tasty but make sure it has not been pasteurized that kills the beneficial bacteria).
STEP FOUR DETOX AND REJUVENATION
Years of poor diet, low nutrition, eating late, eat junk foods loaded with pesticides etc… leave the internal body full of undigested residue and toxic sludge.
